Learning Flavors

It's probably because my son has started working in an ice cream shop that I am beginning to think of learning paths as flavors. Similar to the way you walk into an ice cream store and choose the flavor you're in the mood for, my learning paths sit before me ready for the taking--the moment I'm in the mood to learn that. If you stay ahead of the game, you have the luxury of learning what you're in the mood for most of the time.  Hence you're able to match mood, energy and learning pursuit which results in optimal learning.

What learning flavors stand before me?
  • Learning Playlists: Creating and personalizing playlists for upcoming units.
  • Endangered Species: Enriching, revising and strengthening the endangered species website for guided student research.
  • Digital Stories: Researching story and digital composition.
  • Math Workshop: Researching math workshop and organizing all my existing information in that regard.
  • Digital Math Project: Recreating and organizing digital math project information.  Further research.
  • Student Social Network: Creating a closed social network platform for next year's class.
  • Fraction Action: Organizing and finessing all information related to the fraction unit.
  • Fraction Show: Designing a fraction project that includes the new standards and responds to my students' learning needs and profiles.
  • Students First: Participating in Hargadon's interview tonight with John Hattie.
  • Teacher Challenge: NBPTS recertification work.
  • Learning Design: Researching learning design and applying that research to next year's program.
  • Collaboration: Using Intentional Interruption's key points to affect my collaborative work.
  • Quest Atlantis: I know this game has terrific merit for student learning, but the lengthy, cumbersome system rules for games like this are slowing down the process of my research. Yet I may find time for this over the summer.
There's a strength to publishing your learning flavor list. For some reason, publishing the list strengthens the psychological tie between objective and accomplishment.

What's on your learning flavor list? What am I missing?  Do you organize your learning in a similar way? I'm sure I'll add to and revise this list as the days go on, but having this handy list will allow me to quickly match time, energy and effort to the learning goals that sit before me.

Also if you have the chance, visit Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day and think of this metaphor as your choose a flavor that matches your mood.
