Our school hours changed. Our students have changed. Some of our leaders have changed. This has all created both promise and adjustment to new routines.
My overarching reaction to Zaretta Hammond's terrific book, Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, is to slow down the teaching in order to make time for sensitive, responsive, knowing care and attention to each and every child, colleague, and parent member.
There's much to do to make sure that every child feels welcome in the classroom community, and a large part of this work is simply to give students and ourselves as educators the good time and attention we need to adjust well with regard to new people and routines.
