A New School Year Begins

The school year has started with an amazing class, new furniture, a terrific team, and lots to learn.

We began with the following focus/questions:

  • Why is teamwork more important than ever in the world?
  • What are the attributes of good teamwork?
  • Teamwork Challenge: Making sturdy, tall, and/or beautiful towers with notecards.
  • Learning each others' names through introductions, making words finds, and completing words finds.
  • Review of story elements as we start our start-of-the-year read aloud, James Printer, A Novel of Rebellion. Videos and discussion to provide background and context.
  • Math pattern making, discussion, and presentation.
  • Science: How are brains work?
  • Recess, play, transitions, and lots of discussion.
What will the next steps bring?

Read Aloud
We'll continue the read aloud and as we share the book, we'll focus on the trials and tribulations of life during the King Philip's War. We'll also focus in on story elements and other literary topics.

Math
Students will work with patterns, learn about equations, expressions, and variables, complete math-related get-to-know-each other activities, and then pursue the first unit of the year: Place Value.

STEAM
To begin STEAM students will learn to complete a lab report, engage in the notecard challenge a second time, complete the marshmallow-spaghetti challenge, review the steps of the design process, learn about the brain, begin their first science topic, physical science, and create solar ovens.

Assessments
Students will soon take a number of assessments.

Field Studies and Special Events
We'll send out the field study forms, and begin our field studies and special events.
