New Teaching/Learning Pattern

A good pattern leads to positive teaching/learning results. Here's the revised 2017-2018 school year pattern:
  • Math Core: 5 X 60 differentiated standards-based instruction for three classes of 25
  • Math RTI: 2 X 30 targeted small group instruction, oversight of 3 classroom with a project/problem-based learning approach supported by Title One teacher and teaching assistants.
  • Reading RTI: 4 X 45-minute intervention focused on reading comprehension and fluency with small intervention group while overseeing approximately 30 students working on independent reading and related projects.
  • Science Rotations: Approximately 1 X 90-minute hands-on, standards-based project/research physical science lab per week plus 30 additional minutes science reading/research.
  • Open Circle: Periodic classroom meetings to focus on SEL and class community issues as they arise
  • Extra Help: About 5 mornings a week from 8-8:30 an open classroom for student study and support
  • Kindergarten Buddies: One afternoon a week typically focused on a hands-on math/science activity with our kindergarten buddies next door.
  • Student-Service Meetings: Team meeting to focus on the needs of specific students as well as the entire fifth grade for two 45-minute periods a week.
  • Professional Learning Community: One 45-minute meeting per week to focus on curriculum related data, programming, design, and revision related to students' needs and interests.
  • Recess: Approximately 5 X 40 minutes a day of outdoor/indoor play.
  • Prep and Planning: Three-four hours a day of lesson planning, preparation, and review.  About one-hour of this prep is during the school day.
I will focus on this pattern in the weeks ahead to move towards the goals set for the year. Once the math MCAS is complete, I'll reset the pattern again to meet the expectations of a large number of valued end-of-the-year projects and special events.
