Inspire All Americans to Vote with Mandatory High School Civics Class and Voter Registration

Let's make it mandatory that every high school junior take a civics class which results in registration to vote. This would help us to uplift the populous by giving every citizen no matter their race, culture, religion, class, geographical location or leaning the opportunity to get involved in American politics in ways that matter.

I think that this effort can begin in the great state of Massachusetts, a state that is about to reveal their new social studies standards for all to comment on. I would like all Massachusetts residents to support this idea by writing to your local and state representatives and asking him/her to forward this idea. The result would be a populous that understands our government and is able to take part in the government by voting.

I would like to offer students that take the course the opportunity to register and vote at age 17 as a positive result of taking the course. However, a friend noted that may be impossible so if impossible, at least I would like them all to be registered so the minute they become 18 they will be able to vote. If this idea spread through the country, we would have a lot more registered voters by the next presidential election, and if every high school student received a civics course and the opportunity to register to vote, then I believe they would be talking this up with their family members and that would inspire greater participation in our democracy by people of all ages.

What would that civics course look like?

It would fully introduce our country's Constitution, government structure, and laws. Further it would demonstrate successful political movements near and far like the Civil Rights Movement and Women's Voting Rights that significantly bettered life in America. Further it would entail student participation in local committee meetings and public law making events.

I think this is an idea that will help us to foster a better republic, a stronger democracy, and a more participatory nation. Do you agree? If so, send this idea to your local lawmakers and let's get started. Imagine what our future will be like if more voices are involved in our nation's laws and governing. I believe it will be a better future for all if this happens. Do you agree?

Note: I received this tweet, great idea/practice, and link related to the idea.
