### Math Journal: Four

We'll begin the year examining the numbers 0-12. What do you know about the number four?

As we examine the number 4, students will also be introduced to the grade-level standards related to numerical expressions. They will distinguish between expressions and equations during this study.

List facts and properties about 4.
4 is the first even square number. 4 is the first composite number. 4 is equal to 2 squared. 4 is only number w/same # of letters as its value. 4 is the smallest squared prime (2 squared) Multiples of 4’s last two digits are always a multiple of 4. 4-sided polygons are quadrilaterals. A square has 4 even sides and angles. IV is 4 in Roman Numerals IIII is 4 in tally marks quad is the prefix for 4 such as quart (4 cups), quadrangle (polygon w/four angles), quadruplets (4 babies born at once)
• A rational number is any number that can be written as a simple fraction. Example 2 is a rational number because it can be written as 4/2.
• An integer is a number, positive or negative, with no fractional parts. 4 is an integer, but 4.25 or 4 ¼ is not.
• A natural number is a whole number from 1 upwards. (Whole numbers are positive integers.)
