School choices 2020

The news is filled with stories related to what to do about opening schools for the 2020-2021 school year in ways that are advantageous, healthy, and positive for all. This is not an easy problem to solve in the midst of a pandemic. If I were in charge of the world, I would do the following:

Focus on family
While everyone and everything is facing challenging during this horrible pandemic, we could create a national focus on family. The pandemic limitations lend themselves to an intimate focus on family life. As a country we could use this time to shore up supports for positive family life in the following ways:
  • Boost adequate housing and make sure that everyone has a suitable place to live
  • Make sure that every family has access to good nutrition centers
  • Boost opportunities for healthy, affordable recreation
  • Make sure that every community has suitable WIFI and access to tech devices
  • Make sure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care
  • Focus on education that is worthy and accessible to families at home
Take the long view
Don't risk lives for short term gain, instead take the long view and make safe choices to save and elevate lives.

Keep it simple
Don't make problems where there are none, instead reallocate people, finances, time, and energy to making sure that people are safe and supported during this global challenge.

Don't take risks that are unchangeable
As you consider your personal risk/reward choices, don't make choices that you cannot undo. For example, don't put yourself in a risk situation that is likely to result in your death or grave illness--nothing is worth that. Also don't risk your good relationships on short-term differing COVID-19 responses.

So with regard to school choices, it's more than school--these choices will affect your entire life as well as your relationships. Each school employee and family that has children in schools will have to consider these choices with the broader picture in mind. Hopefully wise leaders will make choices that are focused on healthy living rather than short term economic gain for a small percentage of wealthy folk in the country. Onward.
