Deliver respect; expect respect

Respect is an important attribute of character.

What exactly is respect?

I like the way it is simply described in this Forbes article.

How can we develop greater respect?

Listening is a key component--what are people really saying?

Honest and polite responses are another key component--to respond with honesty and good manners is critical.

To ask questions helps too--it's much easier to be respectful when we understand situations well, and polite questioning can lead to that.

The "extra drawer rule" helps to build respect too--that means always scheduling your time so that you have a bit of extra space in it. When you're not too busy, it's easier to be respectful.

When respect is challenged, it's good to take note of the situation and think deeply about why respect is challenged at that moment--what is it that stands in the way of respect? The more you understand that, the easier it will be to be respectful.

We develop attributes of character when we give those attributes attention, thought, and practice--to be respectful profits from that attention.
