Teaching Error and Exhaustion

Yesterday was not the greatest teaching day. And after assessing the day, I realized the primary reason for the less-than-wonderful day was exhaustion. I was simply very tired.

I thought of not going in early yesterday morning. I knew I didn't feel good and was very tired, yet it's very difficult to miss a day of school. To be home requires calling the principal, making plans, organizing the materials and more. Yet, you don't want to err during the day either. What's a teacher to do?

As much as possible educators have to make sure they get the rest and relaxation they need to teach well. It's difficult to be on top of your game when you are exhausted. Teaching is a demanding job--one that requires substantial energy and rest.

The holidays are a time of year when children get extra-tired too due to holiday excitement, celebrations, and changed family schedules. When children are tired, teachers have to be extra-sensitive and caring which requires extra energy too.

So, in general, the message is that the holidays are the time for educators to make sure they get the rest they need to teach the children well. Exhaustion in any sphere leads to error, and we all need to avoid that as much as possible.
