There are many areas of school life that are out of a teacher's control. These areas differ from state-to-state, system-to-system, and school-to-school. Generally if something is out of my control and I disagree with it, I try to work for change. That advocacy takes a lot of effort and energy, and can be very troubling when met with a lack of success.
At this time, I will accept more of those areas I disagree with as long as they don't hurt a child in any way, and I will focus on my spheres of influence and impact--the areas where my good energy and effort makes a positive difference.
I've worked for years to build a profitable program with research, time, and effort. Some areas that I've identified as successful approaches are no longer allowed, and I have to just let that go even though I don't agree. I've tried to voice my concern, but I can see that I have little voice in these areas so I'll focus in on the work I can do, and listen carefully and continue to study to find areas where I can grow more.
It's important for every professional to seek out areas where they can make a positive difference and contribute good energy to do what matters. Onward.
