Upstander or Bystander?

So many recent sad news reports would have been changed if those in attendance were upstanders rather than bystanders.

Upstanders speak up and change the course of negative actions.

Bystanders stand by and watch it happen.

We can teach young children about the difference, and that will make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Young children can't always interfere with a wrong event, but they can speak up to a trusting adult.

Sometimes, however, they can speak up during an incident when someone is doing the wrong thing.

A wise leader many years ago brought this issue to our school with passion. In fact, she made a point of visiting every classroom to educate children about this issue with modeling, play acting, and conversation.

Looking back, I recognize what a gift she gave to all of those students.

It's time to continue that good work with the children we serve every day.
