Unit Redesign: Endangered Species

The one given in my teaching is that no two years will be the same. No two projects will be the same either.

Each year I weave the standards and learning goals into class projects that mirror a class's personality, interests and style.

I have savvy tech students this year. Creating a slide show, film or poster is something they know how to do.  Hence, this year I'll essentially combine creativity days and endangered species to create a project focused on what it means to research, write and present in a way that affects an audience's attitudes, knowledge and interest.

The project will include the following traditional standards:
  • guided research.
  • informational writing.
  • science and social studies background information.
  • a presentation.
The new features of this year's project will include the following:
  • a class presentation.
  • a menu of creative presentation options.
  • collaborative planning and execution of the final event.
  • a focus on speaking and oral presentation skills.
Good learning design is design that evolves and changes to respond to students' needs, interests and passions. This year's class is ready for this kind of project, and I'm excited about facilitating a new idea.
