In the professional world, there are mandates--actions you're expected to complete, and then there are choices, expectations you're invited to take part in. When the line becomes blurry between the two, mistrust often arises. For example, if you're told it's a choice, but then it turns to a mandate without any communication or explanation, it can leave you feeling much like a peon--voiceless, powerless, disregarded.
