It's the time of year in schools when we celebrate retirements. I went to a retirement party today that was well orchestrated including wonderful songs, thoughtful speeches, and a chance to see so many educators we worked with throughout our tenure. In so many ways as I looked out over the room, I saw many of my years pass by. There were superintendents past and present, colleagues past and present, and community members too. As I noticed each person and spoke to some, I thought about the stories we shared, moments of support, and in some cases, moments of challenge too.
The speakers were inspiring as they focused on the essence of the event: the retiree's signature traits, contribution, and personal strengths and talents. Retirement parties honor individuals' careers and provide an opportunity to come together as a professional group to celebrate the work we do and the people we teach with. Onward.
