Notes of Support vs Add-Ons

Educators receive multiple communications. When that communication helps you do your job well, the communication is welcome, but when the communication is an add-on that seemingly connects to no real support or help for the work you do, it's discouraging.

Sometimes add-ons connect more to marketing than to good teaching--the efforts are meant to show off what we do rather than support what we do. I know it's important to share the good news of hard work and meaningful endeavor, but I think that display has to be planned and done with the teaching team rather than using the teaching team as the workers who simply support the marketing efforts of others. Sometimes marketing can take the focus in schools away from the good teaching and learning that is our main priority.

This year I continue to think about what's truly supportive and positive in the schoolhouse and what efforts are more superficial, less supportive, and outdated or ill directed. I want to devote my time and effort to the events that are truly rich and supportive of students' holistic, positive, and life-enriching learning. Fortunately there are many efforts that do support this work so there are many people and projects to devote that time to.
