When you take a look at a person, you get a first impression. What do you know right away when you look at that person?
The same is true for numbers. There's a lot to know about a number by a simple observation. What can we know about a number just by looking at it?
We can quickly identify the following:
- # of digits
- even or odd
- many of the numbers factors by using the divisibility rules
- value
What else?
Today as students study the divisibility rules, we'll start by talking about first impressions. Then we'll discuss "number first impressions" and how those impressions can help us with regard to mathematical thinking and understanding. If time permits, we'll also play a favorite math game, Factor Captor.
