Tech Age Tenets

What are your tech age ethics and how do you carry them out with your learning team?

I've read a lot about mindsets related to technology and learning in the past few years, and I've developed a number of new work ethics for the tech age we live in.  Here's my list; what would you add, revise or delete? This is a work in progress.

1. Reply to email.
If someone emails, I respond.

2. Keep emails short and polite
(I admit I don't to this, but I value it--my current work schedule which has me working in direct service almost all the time, leaves almost no time for face-to-face discussions.  Ideally, I believe emails should be short and to the point.)

3.Communicate
Let the learning team know what's happening, and invite their questions, comments and ideas. Make a regular, timely pattern of communication.

4. Collaborate
Work with all members of the team, not just some.  Work together.

5. Transparency
Whenever possible, be transparent about the work you're doing, ideas you're contemplating and questions you have.  Transparency saves time for the important work.

6. Make Mistakes
Don't let a fear of mistakes hinder what you can do, and the innovations that might really make an important difference.

7. Innovate
Try new ideas; progress.

8. Research
Stay abreast of the latest news and information related to the work you do.  Collaborate on this research and information sharing with the learning team.  There's too much information for one person to be able to know it all.

9. Regular Revision, Refinement and Response
Institute systems so that work is updated and meeting the needs of the learning team as often as possible.

10. Digital Share
Share showcase work and information on digital documents that can be accessed by all 24-7 and anywhere there's Internet access.

11. Efficiency
Choose streamlined tools and processes that eliminate the drudgery and dull work so that's there's more time for meaningful endeavor.

12. Face-to-Face
Determine the types of conversations, discussions and events that are best carried out with others, not online.

13. Strategic Tools
Choose the best tools, tech or no tech, to meet identified needs.

14. Break Down the Walls of Departments, Grade Levels and Roles
Allow your organization to profit from the synergy of efforts and benefit from the diversity of view points, voices and understanding.

15. Credit Others.
When I use an idea that someone else has shared, I thank and credit that person.  I don't believe it is ethical to lurk, take ideas and not give credit particularly if you work in the same organization as the person who shared the idea in the first place.

How do these tech age tenets match your behavior and action?  Where are the challenges, and how do we move towards effective, targeted work with the goals, vision and mission of our organizations in mind
